Who uses 6-10kg square-bottom bags?
Let me tell you a true story. A friend of mine who makes cat food initially used 5kg bags. Distributors kept telling him customers wanted larger packages—multi-cat households might finish a bag in a month, making larger packages more cost-effective. Later, they introduced 10kg square-bottom bags, added handles, and reinforced the bottom. He said, "Large packaging is for volume, but if the packaging can't withstand the weight, it's all for nothing."
The 6-10kg range is typically used for heavy, dry goods that need long-term storage: rice, flour, cat and dog food, coffee beans, and animal feed. The core of the packaging is simply: it must be able to withstand the weight.
Technical Core: Two problems that large packaging must solve:
1. Weight-bearing capacity: the bottom must be reinforced.
Small bags can be sealed casually, but when a 6-10kg bag is fully loaded and lifted, the bottom seams must bear the entire weight. Therefore, a reinforced square bottom structure is essential:
Multi-layer composite bottom: Some designs include an additional reinforcing layer to distribute stress.
Reinforced stitching: Machine-sewn bottoms are more load-bearing than heat-sealed bottoms.
M-shaped folded bottom: Wide bottom when unfolded, providing stability and even stress distribution.
A supplier conducted a test: a 10kg rice bag dropped 1 meter 10 times did not crack at the bottom.
2. For handling, good handles are crucial.
A 10kg item is impossible to move without good handles. Common handle types:
PP injection-molded handles: The strongest, capable of supporting over 15kg, but slightly more expensive.
Paper folding handles: Environmentally friendly, capable of supporting 8-10kg, suitable for kraft paper bags.
Rope handles: Attractive, moderate load-bearing capacity, suitable for lightweight items.
Perforated handles: Holes are directly cut into the bag, low cost, but can be uncomfortable to hold.
PP injection-molded handles are commonly used for cat and dog food bags, while paper folding handles or stitched handles are more common for rice and flour bags.
How to Choose the Material?
For heavy goods weighing 6-10kg, the material thickness and structure need to be upgraded:
Material Structure Thickness Applicable Scenarios
Kraft Paper + PE Coating 120-150gsm Rice, Grains, Flour
PET/AL/PE 100-120μm Coffee Beans, Pet Food (High Barrier)
Woven Fabric Composite Bag 80-100gsm Fabric + Film Feed, Chemical Raw Materials, Highest Load Bearing
Single Material PE 120-150μm Environmentally friendly, recyclable
Tips: Use kraft paper + PE for rice and grains, moisture-proof and breathable; use aluminum foil composite for pet food and coffee beans, barrier and preservation; use woven fabric composite for very heavy items like feed, the strongest.
Applicable Product Categories (Refer to this list)
Product Category | Common Specifications | Special Needs
Rice/Grains | 5kg, 10kg | Kraft paper texture, moisture-proof, handle
Flour/Premixed Powder | 5kg, 10kg | Moisture-proof, large opening, easy to tear
Cat Food/Dog Food | 6kg, 8kg, 10kg | High barrier for freshness, handle, sealing strip
Coffee Beans/Powder | 5kg, 10kg | One-way vent valve, high barrier
Feed/Grains | 10kg, 20kg | Woven fabric composite, maximum load-bearing capacity
Pet Treats | 5kg, 8kg | Transparent window optional
Size Reference
For the same weight, different products have different densities, so the dimensions will vary:
5kg Reference
Rice/Beans (High Density): 280 x 160 x 450mm
Pet Food (Medium Density): 300 x 180 x 500mm
Coffee Beans (Medium Density): 280 x 160 x 450mm 480mm
10kg Reference Size
Rice/Beans: 350 x 200 x 600mm
Pet Food: 380 x 220 x 650mm
High-Density Feed: 330 x 180 x 700mm
Size Selection Tips: The ideal fill rate after bagging is 85%-90%. Too full and the bottom may burst; too empty and it will be unstable on the shelf.
Functional Options
Sealing Strip: Reusable; often used for pet food and coffee beans (5kg and above).
One-Way Vent Valve: Specifically for coffee beans; vents air and prevents oxygen intake.
Transparent Window: Allows direct product display; commonly used for pet snacks and high-end rice and flour products.
Easy Tear Opening: No scissors needed; also necessary for large packages.
Rounded Corners: Safe and easy to handle.
If you are looking for a supplier,
we have manufactured many 6-10kg square-bottom bags, shipping rice, cat and dog food, and coffee beans. The bags are laid flat upon arrival at the factory; filling is done with a simple stretcher, compatible with both manual and automated lines.
You can send samples to check the feel, or discuss which structure is best suited for your product—kraft paper or high-barrier paper, whether handles are needed, and what type of goods are being packed.

Q1: What is a flat-bottom bag? How is it different from a regular packaging bag?
A: A flat-bottom bag (also known as a stand-up pouch or square-bottom bag) can naturally expand at the bottom after filling, forming a stable square or rectangular cross-section, allowing it to stand upright for display. It has a neater appearance and better shelf display effect. Regular back-seal or three-side seal bags cannot stand upright and have poorer stacking and display capabilities.
Q2: What types of products are typically packaged in 6-10 kg flat-bottom bags?
A: They are suitable for large quantities of granular, powdered, and solid products. Common uses include:
Pet food: Dog food, cat food.
Bulk food products: Rice, flour, sugar, grains, nuts.
Industrial raw materials: Plastic pellets, fertilizers, animal feed.
